Here’s a growing listing of delivery programs created by farms themselves or farm supporters that make available on a weekly basis a box of fresh locally-grown veggies and fruits for delivery or pick-up.
CSA stands for Community Support Agriculture and the concept was developed to help people support farms by placing regularly scheduled orders directly.
Originally, CSAs were developed with an deeper commitment to supporting a farm: a group of supporters paid for a year long subscription to weekly or monthly boxes for pick up at farm or at farmers markets. This commitment up front helped farmers to pay for costs early on, instead of fronting costs on their own. Also, if a weather calamity or natural disaster led to crop loss, everyone shared in the financial loss instead of the farmer absorbing the entire loss on her or his own.
We’d like to see a return to this original kind of thinking for CSAs. We are hoping that this food map will help groups of friends, families and even businesses organize and connect directly with interested farmers to create their own CSAs!
